Use Across the Curriculum

Video clips can be viewed multiple times to illustrate different points, or additional clips of the same client can be utilized over time to meet different learning objectives.  Many curricula build upon foundational skills and expect more complex analytic, evaluative or creative skills demonstrated by the learner over time.

Foundational Courses / Year One

Upper Extremity Observations of Motor Control

Upper Extremity Observations of Motor Control

This menu of possible learning objectives can be used to build foundational skills in the learner, often taught in the first several semesters of a program.

After viewing the video, the learner will be able to:

  1. Summarize specific therapeutic techniques demonstrated by the therapist

  2. Explain therapeutic use of self, demonstrated by the therapist

  3. Summarize client strengths and deficits

  4. Execute an activity analysis of the client activity

  5. Identify models of practice and/or frames of reference used by the therapist in the case

  6. Describe safety considerations for this client in the current setting

  7. Identify appropriate questions for the client and/or family to develop an occupational profile

Questions

  • Write an occupational profile for Dick. Is there any additional information that you would like to obtain?

  • How does the therapist utilize therapeutic use of self?

  • Summarize client strengths and deficits observed (may use terminology from the OT Practice Framework)

  • Describe a model of practice and/or frame of reference utilized by the therapist

  • Perform an activity analysis of Dick’s ability to doff his jacket

  • Describe safety considerations for Dick in the out-client setting. Describe safety considerations for Dick at home or in the community.

Practice Courses / Year Two

This menu of possible learning objectives can be used to build more complex skills related to clinical practice, often taught in conditions and/or interventions courses.

After viewing the case and completing the learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Determine additional assessments relevant for the client in same setting

  2. Determine additional assessments relevant for the client in next practice setting, considering appropriate continuum of care

  3. Infer the specific types of clinical reasoning utilized by the therapist (i.e., scientific, procedural, pragmatic, narrative, interactive, conditional, ethical)

  4. Generate an intervention plan for the next session with this client (may include different activities than those viewed in case)

  5. Explain how models of practice and/or frames of reference are used in development of an intervention plan for the next session with this client

  6. Write an initial evaluation, including short-term (or long-term) goals for the client, based on current performance

  7. Complete documentation for this session (e.g. progress note)

  8. Organize information from case and present the case in a format suitable for a team (or family) meeting
